Stormzy’s film company, #Merky Films, is teaming up to produce a biopic about Ian Wright, focusing on the former Arsenal striker’s early life and rise to football stardom. The rapper described Wright as someone who has “inspired generations on and off the pitch.”

Wright, who turned professional in his early 20s after a difficult childhood and multiple rejections as a teenager, went on to become one of Arsenal’s all-time top scorers. He has often spoken about his challenging upbringing, but says this film will be “the first time we’re bringing it all together.”

Stormzy called it an “honour” to co-produce the film, adding that it will help “bring such an important and powerful story to the screen.”

Born in Woolwich, London, in 1963 to Jamaican parents from the Windrush generation, Wright’s story covers how football became his only escape from a tough home life. He has previously spoken about being abused by his stepfather. The film will also feature Sydney Pigden, the school teacher Wright has called “the greatest man in the world,” who helped him learn to read and write and encouraged him to believe in himself.

Wright’s struggles to secure a professional contract are a key part of the narrative. He had unsuccessful trials with Southend United and Brighton & Hove Albion as a teenager, and played amateur Sunday league football before his raw talent finally caught a professional club’s attention. According to the film’s announcement, the story follows him up to the moment he must decide whether to “take a shot at the big time.”

“Telling my story in full for the first time feels surreal and, in some ways, a long time coming,” Wright said. “I hope it shows how complicated life can be for a young person and the influence people around you can have – good and bad. There are hard-hitting moments but in the end I want it to give people hope and joy.”

Stormzy, a well-known Manchester United fan, will serve as executive producer on the project. He added that Wright’s “journey goes far beyond football – it’s about resilience, family and believing in yourself against the odds.”

After retiring from football in 2000, Wright built a successful broadcasting career, appearing on the BBC’s World Cup coverage and Match of the Day until 2024. He has also been a vocal advocate for women’s football and domestic violence awareness. In 2023, he received an OBE from Prince William for his work.

More recently, Wright co-managed a team with Lioness Chloe Kelly in the six-a-side Baller League, and for the latest season, he managed Wembley Rangers AFC alongside fellow former England player Alan Shearer.

Details about the cast, director, and release date of the Ian Wright biopic are yet to be announced.
