Flamengo’s victory over Grêmio has come at a cost, leaving head coach Leonardo Jardim with a significant headache regarding his midfield options for the upcoming fixture.
Both Jorginho and Evertton Araújo, the current first-choice defensive midfielders, received their third yellow cards during the match and will be suspended for the next round against Athletico at the Arena da Baixada.
On the bench, Jardim has Saúl and De La Cruz available. However, the Uruguayan is unlikely to be used in the clash with Athletico, as he does not play on artificial turf.
Flamengo has also been without Pulgar, who is still recovering from a shoulder injury. Additionally, Paquetá, another option for the midfield, is currently sidelined with an issue.
The club has been turning to 18-year-old youngster Luiz Felipe to fill the reserve bench among the midfielders.
The upcoming week of physiotherapy and physical preparation will determine whether the coach’s concerns can be eased.
