West Ham United could face relegation as early as next Sunday, with just one week of the Premier League season remaining.
That scenario would unfold if Tottenham Hotspur beat Leeds United on Monday and the Hammers lose to Newcastle United next weekend.
Spurs, currently one point above West Ham with a game in hand, would secure their safety with victories in two of their final three fixtures. After facing Leeds, they travel to Chelsea before hosting Everton on the last day.
West Ham, who welcome Leeds on the final matchday, must collect at least two more points than Tottenham due to a significantly worse goal difference.
“We performed well,” said West Ham manager Nuno Espirito Santo following Sunday’s loss to Arsenal. “The players showed character, and the stadium atmosphere was incredible. We knew the situation we’re in, and the lads fought hard.
“This is what we’ll continue to do until the final whistle of the season. With two games left, it’s our duty to recover, fight, and believe anything is still possible.
“Of course it’s tough, but we’ve been competitive, especially at London Stadium. The crowd’s energy was infectious for the players. We’ll give everything. This group will respond.”
