SC Freiburg has officially announced an early contract extension for Berkay Yilmaz, who returns after a two-year loan spell at 1. FC Nürnberg. The 21-year-old left-back has impressed during his time in the 2. Bundesliga, earning a new deal that runs beyond 2028, reportedly for an additional three years.
Yilmaz, a Turkish U21 international, is versatile on the left flank and can also play in central midfield. In the current season, he has recorded one goal and seven assists for Nürnberg, coached by Miroslav Klose. Since August 2024, Yilmaz has contributed to nine goals in 58 appearances for the second-division club, boosting his market value from €500,000 to €5 million.
“Berkay adapted very well to the 2. Bundesliga and showed a good balance between offensive involvement and defensive responsibility. He has a big heart and total identification with SC Freiburg – this is a strong foundation to continue working on details together. We look forward to it. Our thanks also go to Nürnberg for their excellent collaboration on this loan,” said sporting director Klemens Hartenbach.
Yilmaz added: “I had a very good time in Nürnberg, for which I am very grateful. But it was always my plan and desire to succeed at SC Freiburg. So today is a big day for me. I am really looking forward to wearing the SC jersey at the Europa-Park-Stadion and celebrating successes together.”
